This project titled “American Liminality” investigates the liminal aspects of American identity. Liminality is defined as an in-between state; each image speaks to a particular identity or aspect that embodies this transient perceived identity. By embracing alternative process, each image speaks to the perception of the subject matter, not so much their inherent identity, but rather how they are seen in the broader American political purview.
A quick word about the image-making process: each image is printed as a digital negative, then photographed on 6x6 film. This film is then developed, printed on expired B&W paper, solarized, and chemogramed. This print is then scanned using Epson Scan where the colors are extrapolated using various in-software curve adjustments. There is no photoshop involved.
